Less than 24 hours later, the natural mother whom I had been trying to reach now for well over a month finally called me. She reached my husband at home who was fully aware of why I was trying to reach this woman and he gave her my cell phone number. When she called I was taken back and as the conversation went on, I realized this person was just being cautious. The adoptee had phoned her and left a message. The natural mother decided to call me back prior to returning the adoptees call.

This moment of learning that her daughter was searching for her is something that she had hoped for throughout many decades. She wanted to know if her daughter was alive and ok and that she had not been mistreated. The particular natural mother was afraid after hearing so many horror stories of adoptees lives after adoption and how many are abused, she was is constant sorrow and aching to know that she was ok. After making contact with the agency in 1994 and the adoptive parents feeling that contact was not a good idea she had resigned herself to just be ok with the idea that she may not want a relationship or to get to know the natural mother, but she knew her daughter was alive, that she would have to wait, and be patient.

The natural mother’s day had come and after all these years of waiting that is where she was comfortable. She didn’t know how to proceed or what to say or do next. She asked me to call the adoptee to get her home phone number because the number she left on her message was a work number. The natural mother was not comfortable having that conversation while the adoptee was at work.

I phoned the adoptee, obtained the phone number, provided it to the natural mother who said she would call that evening. I hope that in the future they will advise of how things are going.
