Mother and Child Reunion is one of those “feel good” reunion stories that warms the heart. Well, it warms your heart if you like the idea of reunions; not everyone does.
Then she began to panic. Her first thought: “How am I going to lose 20 pounds overnight?”
I could not help but laugh at the comment above made by the birth mother found by her son, and preparing to meet him. How many birth mothers could identify with that thought? In fact, just recently I wrote about my fussy preparations before meeting my son for that first face-to-face.
This story has many of the usual elements. The birth mother never searched because she did had fears of disrupting her son’s life. Yet, she was fully prepared to meet her son once he found her. A piece of mail informed her that her son wanted contact and she was excited and thrilled.
Like many birth mothers, the mother in this story had not had any other children. She is a nurse which also seems to me a career than I have noticed is one that it seems many birth mothers choose. In fact, many birth mothers choose “helping” professions such as nursing or social work.
Her son reported having had a wonderful life growing up and loving parents. He said that he was raised by an incredible mother and father who offered him all the opportunities anyone could ever ask for. Many adoptees make similar comments.
When he was eight or nine years old and working on a school report about his lineage, he was told about his adoption. After that the subject was seldom brought up again. Talking about adoption in that era was uncommon. One interesting fact in this story, however, was that the adoptee did not seem to be bothered by the fact that there was little discussion of his adoption after he was initially told that he was adopted.
