When Darryl, and I chatted the morning of his interview, I felt as though we connected in a strong way. We understood one another.

As I played back the tape of our interview, I noted that there was a similar thread throughout our interview. We agreed with each other a great deal. Every so often one of us would say, "Do you know what I mean?". Each time that happened, the other person responded, "Yes, I know exactly what you mean."

Although we come from different parts of the triad, some of our adoption issues are similar. Feeling misunderstood, being highly aware of our losses are some of the similarities. Understanding why open records are so important is another issue that we shared as well.

Therefore, when I heard that DMC was being interviewed on my favorite Sunday morning show, I smiled and attentively prepared to to from hear an old friend. DMC shares his adoption and reunion story in a extraordinarily honest and moving manner. He shares his pain and his joy, giving equal attention to both. Darryl acknowledges the realities of adoption, the good and the bad.

DMC is part of my family now - the family of adoption. He acknowledges the significant loss his adoption presented to him, and the resulting struggles. Yet he also presents his story in a positive and upbeat manner as well. He exhibits no anger or that he feels sorry for himself.

He loves the life he has and appreciates it. Adoption seems to have had a profound effect on his life, but, it does not define him. His reunion has helped him and been a positive experience for him.

If you have not heard his new song and video "Just Like Me", I invite you to cue it up and watch it with your child. I believe that you will enjoy it.

Jan, I saw this show and was impressed at how articulate he was - not the 'rapper' guy I was expecting. I wish he would have said more about how he felt about his adoptive mom though....

I agree - he is very well-spoken. He did say that his adoptive parents were the best parents anyone could ever have. Says he never lacked for anything, etc. His feelings for his adoptive mom are totally positive.
