Searching in Canada

Just as adoption laws differ in the U.S. from state to state, in Canada laws are different from province to province. There have been some changes and/or proposed changes in Canada the past few years in some provinces which allow more access to records. This link lists the provinces and resources specific to each province.

The link above came from the website of Links Post-Legal Adoption Support Group which offers a wealth of varied information about searching in Canada.

Canada: Search Information and Support has a long and complete list of links to aid in a Canadian search. Provided at this adoption.com link are search handbooks specifically geared for Canadian searches, information on adoption laws in Canada and searchable telephone databases for Canada.

This link shares a touching mother and son reunion in Canada. Most adoption reunion websites are from only one point of view. This website is somewhat unique as both mother and son discuss their successful reunion. Another interesting aspect of their website is that they have updated their site several times to offer progress reports.

There is a specific forum at adoption.com for searchers in Canada to trade information and to find each other. Finding others who are searching in the same state or province can often provide a wealth of useful information for adoption searchers.

Whenever someone begins a search, I always recommend that they seek out their local adoption reform support group. The members of adoption reform groups are often reunited or searching triad members. Some of their members may be well versed in successful techniques and/or ways to obtain information locally.

International searches have their own unique challenges, and are often more difficult. However, some international searches are successful. Even when there is no success in locating birth family, sometimes there are advantages to reconnecting with one's culture or homeland country. Another benefit of searching in general is the journey itself, not always the end result. For this reason, I think international searches make sense even considering the added difficulties, and less likely success.
