For me one of the best parts about any event that I attend is usually the people whose hearts touch me in a myriad of ways. In past
CUB retreats, I have met many inspiring and interesting people. In addition to CUB members from all over the country, there are also authors and speakers.
In past years, I have had the pleasure to meet some of the most notable “stars” in the adoption world such as Nancy Verrier, Carol Schafer, Evelyn Robinson and others. Most, for obvious reasons are women, but I have also met two amazing birth dads, Jon Klaren, and Gary Coles.
The retreat that just occurred was no exception as far as fascinating people to meet. The main speaker, who had many of us very excited and eager to hear her, was Ann Fessler of
“The Girls Who Went Away” fame. Many of the “girls” who were interviewed for her book were also present.

Another wonderful feature at this last CUB retreat, in celebration of CUB's 30th anniversary, was the return to the fold of many of the founding members. Lee Campbell, the driving force and founder, of CUB was one of those women who captivated our attention. I was so throughly awed and inspired by the stories of the courage and determination that early CUB members had to possess. They paved the way for the birth mothers of today, and the road is easier for us due to all the work that they did.
Another truly incredible person that I had the chance to meet was author, adoption reform activist, Sandy Musser. I sat next to her on a panel discussion, and got to chat with her a few minutes. I really enjoyed meeting her and was very moved by her story. Sandy Musser has the distinction of being the only searcher in the history of adoption reform who went to prison. After spending four months in jail, many years ago, she is now a convicted felon!
P.S. This photo is my friend, Cynthia, Ann Fessler and me. Cynthia is a fairly reunited birth mom, Ann Fessler is an adoptee, and well, you already know about me!
