``I've been wanting to tell you something," she said in a near-whisper. ``But I was afraid."
Adams leaned toward his mother, whose curly white hair framed her narrow face.
``David," she said, looking straight at him. ``You're adopted."

Story about an 70 year old adoptee. This story is a real doozy! The adoptee was told about his adoption when he was 70 years old. His adoptive mom was 101 when she told him.

Late Discovery Adoptees ("LDAs") are adoptees informed of their adoptive status when they are older. Some may be told in their teens, some at age 50 or later. There are some adoptees who stumble across the information about their adoption. One of the most tragic aspects of this scenario may be that by the time an adoptee is told, their birth parents may not still be alive, or nearly impossible to find if they desire to do so. This is an intriguing area of adoption with not a great deal or research and available information. However, there have been several news articles lately about LDAs.

The general consensus is that most adoptees are traumatized by finding out that they were adopted instead of always knowing. Even adoptees that are told at younger ages even sometimes at age 5 or 12, often report that it was a brutal shock for them, much less finding out at age 30, 50 or later. One of the comments I had heard from LDAs is that they feel as though "my whole life was a lie". Everything they thought they knew about themselves and their family, they discover is untrue.

One of the most well-known LDAs is renowned rapper Darryl McDaniels, aka DMC. He found out that he was adopted in his forties when he was doing some research for a biography. Darryl had called his mother to ask details about his birth, which she provided him. An hour later, she called back and told him that he had been adopted when he was about a month old.
