Heartfelt Adoption or Publicity Stunt

I know that many of us have been writing about Madonna and her adoption situation. I actually have been avoiding writing about it as well but the article at http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/couriernews/lifestyles/104980,3_5_EL22_CELEBADOPT_S1.article made me change my mind.

The article titled Celebrity Adoptions: Heartfelt Acts or Publicity Stunts really caught my eye and I felt it was worth spending some time writing a blog or two on the subject.

The article points out that the adoption situation with Madonna has made adoption rights groups begin questioning the growing trend of celebrity adoptions from third world countries.

I am in no way saying that Madonna has chosen to adopt the one year old boy from Malawi as a publicity stunt because I can’t make that statement. None of us really know what is in anyone’s heart and what their agenda is but the Madonna story has made me think some. I am not sure if some of these celebrities that have adopted as of late are doing so for reasons that should be in their hearts or to rescue a child to bring their name out in the head lines. My husband and I have chosen the adoption route because our desire to be parents out weighs our desire to have a biological child. Did Madonna adopt because the celebrity before her did it? Will the next celebrity adopt because Madonna did it? How about Angelina Jolie, Meg Ryan and Mia Farrow? Didn’t they all adopt from poor countries?

I think that as a perspective adoptive mom it takes a lot of preparation, thought, and carefulness. The system seems to put perspective adoptive families through a tremendous amount before a child is placed in their home. Yet, there is none of this for a couple to conceive and have a biological child. How about the celebrities? Do they go through the same scrutiny as the average perspective adoptive family? It doesn’t appear to be that way. Will it ever change?
