The article acknowledges and validates that natural parents matter to the child and that the long term emotional impact on the donor babies is unknown but many like adoption triad members are asking the age old question of why.

The article also questions what happens when adult rights clash with children’s needs and how these conflicts should be resolved. A study is underway called The Revolution in Parenthood: The Emerging Global Clash Between Adult Rights and Children’s Needs. She argument is that in the rush to redefine parenthood and families it is time to stop and ask some questions.

The whole point of the article is to get the point across to those who claim that what children really need is a loving family and biology doesn’t matter. The article is very clear that it obviously matters quite a lot to adults. The point is validated by using the example of an infertile couple and that if biology didn’t matter, infertile couples would just adopt instead of taking themselves through expensive fertility treatments. In addition the article points out that if biology doesn’t matter then why do so many parents of donor conceived children keep their origins a secret.

I think that this can be a very controversial subject and easily debated in a couple of directions. One question to ponder is are sperm donors fathers? Rhetorically an absent father who is separated from their girlfriend or wife can be reduced to mere sperm donors. However, unlike sperm donors, many states hold them accountable for child support for years to come.

Another fact that many may not realize is that both New Zealand and Britain have ended the practice of donor anonymity. The donor must agree to be contacted once his or her child turns 18. Australia donor fathers are now allowed to contact their adult children and the majority of them don’t know they are the product of artificial insemination.
