There are various types of DNA tests and the purpose of this series of posts is to tell you a little bit about each one. Keep in mind that depending on the laboratory what each test is called may vary. Also, depending on the test, the cost will vary. It is best to get references, ask other triad members whom they have utilized for DNA testing, and shop prices.
Paternity Test: This DNA test determines the likelihood that a male is the biological father of a child. This test can range in price depending on what you are exactly looking for. If you want the test for informational purposes a test kit will be less expensive. However, if you are looking to a test that is a court admissible legal test the cost will be higher. The fee usually includes the alleged father and child. An additional fee may be added to test the mother as well.
Collect and Send Test: This is a test that allows the donors to collect the sample themselves and send it to the genetic testing laboratory. A kit will be delivered to you. You collect a sample from each participant, and mail the test back to the laboratory.
Ancestry Testing: This test will help you discover more about your families heritage. This test will help you learn more about your genetic makeup and provide you with answers about your genetic identity, where your family originated from, and where they traveled.
Maternity Test: Like the paternity test the maternity test evaluates the likelihood that a woman is the biological mother of a child. Fees will vary depending on whether you are doing an informational test or a court admissible legal test. An additional fee may be assessed if you don’t test the father as well.
Sibling Test: This test will help you determine the statistical probability that siblings share the same parents or if two individuals in fact, are related siblings. Unlike the paternity tests, the siblingship tests are unable to provide a conclusive result. This test is able to determine the probability of relatedness, however by testing one common parent the test is much more determinant. Fees for the sibling test are usually higher than the paternity and maternity tests and can range in price depending on whether you want it for informational purposes or court admissible and legal purposes.
