The novel December Boys was first published in 1963 and a synopsis of the book is as follows from the inside of the book itself.

"At the Catholic Orphanage of St. Roderick's, Chocker, Spark, Maps, Fido and Misty were called 'the December Boys', because it was believed that they were all born in that month. Now, in another December, they made their first visit to the sea. They go to Captain's Folly near that legendary village of Serenity which made a vivid background for The Patchwork Hero, to which, in a sense, this books is a sequel. The boys explore this Pacific coastal village with ruthless and inquisitive eyes, searching out the beauty and the comedy of a place which is peopled by relics of the Depression, Genuine eccentrics who have stayed on to live in huts and caves around the bay. With the unquestioning acceptance of youth they meet Fingers Galore, the failed musician who pounds out Rachmaninoff on the piano in his cave, Shelback O'Lear, whose aim in life is to catch the giant groper fish called Henry, and Socrates, an old crock of a cart-horse, who catches fish for a family of wild cats. But it is on Teresa that their holiday centers. She becomes the unwitting source of wild expectations. As the boys compete for her affection they discover emotions which they only partly recognize."
