Because I Loved You: A Birthmother’s View of Open Adoption By Patricia Dischler is a wonderful book written from the perspective of a birth mother who relinquished her son through a semi open adoption in 1984 that evolved into an open adoption.

The book takes you though Patricia’s story from before she learned she was pregnant, to learning of her pregnancy, and the decisions she had to make before she gave birth to her son. The semi open adoption that was arranged changed to an open adoption when her son was 12 and ends with her son’s high school graduation and her son’s involvement and thoughts regarding her telling her story.

The book shows the pains and struggles that a birth mother goes through during the decision process to place a child for adoption as well as the effects of an open adoption. At the same reminds adoptive parents how important it is trust the decision made by the birth mother to relinquish her child to adoption and through communicating with one another the fears of all the triad members involved can be lessened to be able to be honest about adoption and with one another.

The book is also written to aid women who considering the option of adoption. She helps women look at their lives to make a decision that is in the best interest of their baby. She provides advise and encouragement to birth parents as well.

As an adoptee this book helped me to gain a better understanding of the birth parents experience in an open adoption. It shows how the adoptee benefits from openness and grows up with communication and honesty. As a hopeful adoptive parent Because I Loved You helped me to find hope from the author’s experience and put some of my own fears about open adoption to rest.
