This adoption story involves a attorney named Carla Latty who found out at age 30 that she was adopted. Recently at age 54, she found many of the answers that she sought. Thanks to a DNA test, she now has confirmation that her birth father was a white Catholic priest who became involved with her Afro-American birth mom.

Latty learned from her birth mom's two sons about the possibility of the priest being her birth father. The sons remembered late night visits from the priest to her mother, and his description matched what she had been given for the identity of her birth father. Sometimes when a birth parent is not still living, siblings may be able to provide crucial clues.

An 85 year old man whose mother was the sister of the priest who was her birth father is quoted below in this story.

"You can't have a dirty closet forever," Devine told the Globe during a phone call last November. "At some point, somebody has to clean it out."

In Ms. Latty's journey, she also found one full brother, a half brother. Another possible sister refused any testing. Eventually, she found a paternal relative who agreed to be tested, and helped her resolve the mystery of her birth father.

Latty said that as an attorney, she is used to empirical evidence. Although the clues that she had pointed to the priest being her birth father, she wanted concrete confirmation, and the DNA test gave her that conclusive proof.

When asked what she wants to do know that she has the answers that she has been seeking for so many years, Carla Latty said that she "pretty much just wanted to go on with her life." However, not that she has many of the answers that she sought, she will no doubt have some resolution and peace.

What a convoluted mess. I had to read the original article about five times to even begin to get all the connection, and I'm still not sure where the full brother/half brother things come in, especially since the other sons would be half brothers too ... right? ... so how many kids did the mother have all together?

Makes my head spin.

I'm glad this woman has figured it out, though. This could not have been a simple process.

Interesting how complicated things can be, isn't it?

What's that old saying about the web we weave to deceive? Shakespeare maybe? I had the same trouble sorting who the relations as well.

Lies begat more lies and do complicate things for certain.
