Did you see an email message recently that said the Chicken Soup for the Soul publishers were planning a new book, Chicken Soup for the Adopted Soul? The announcement touted the fact that the book would be edited by LeAnne Theiman, an adoptive mom.

Thieman is also co-author of Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Christian Woman’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Caregiver’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Father and Daughter Soul, Chicken Soup for the Grandma’s Soul, Chicken Soup for the Christian Soul 2 and Chicken Soup for the Mother and Son... more

The Stork Market by Mirah Ruben is an in depth examination of the corruption in the adoption industry: the fine line between black and gray market adoptions; scams; coercion and explanation in a market based on supply and demand with prices based on quality such as age and skin color of the merchandise and set as high as desperate consumers are willing to pay.

The Stork Market has been extensively researched, documented and including interviews with the top adoption experts. The Stork Market asks if adoption can be fixed where the money aspect is removed... more

Several months ago, I received an advance copy of a fictional work written by adoptee, S.T. Underdahl. Ms. Underdahl is a neuropsychologist in private practice. Although the book is fiction, it is based loosely on the author's own personal reunion story and is described as suitable reading for young adults.

The Other Sister is about Josey Mueller, who comes up against challenges much like Ms. Underdahl's own sister did. At age 16, when Josey is typically trying to find her own identity and place in the world, her world is turned upside down. A sister appears... more

I received the following correspondence from Carol Schaefer earlier this week regarding her new book Grandmothers Council the World. Carol has authored and/or co-edited a few books the most popular and well known being The Other Mother: A Woman’s Love for the Child She Gave Up for Adoption.

Carol Schaefer is a natural mother, and an awesome person. I have read all of her books as well as seen her off broadway play a few years ago called A Sacred Virgin. She also presents at conferences for the American Adoption Congress,... more

One of the first books I read before I actively started my search was The Other Mother by Carol Schaefer. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this excellent read, it is an awesome book and truly helped me to cross the threshold of thinking about searching to actively searching.

When I completed this book, there was a listing of 5 support groups in the back of the book and I immediately called the closest one to me (PA) which was in FL. I believe the group was called People Searching News and they referred me to two local search and support... more

Part 1 Curious as to what the mega-bookstore had in stock, I asked the clerk for the location of books about books on adoption search and reunion. After a silence and a quizzical look, he finally offered that they might be mixed in with all the other adoption books. There were 2-3 shelves of books on adoption. Amongst all the books, I was pleased to see both of Nancy Verrier’s books, "The Primal Wound" and "Coming Home to Self".

However,... more

Because I Loved You: A Birthmother’s View of Open Adoption By Patricia Dischler is a wonderful book written from the perspective of a birth mother who relinquished her son through a semi open adoption in 1984 that evolved into an open adoption.

The book takes you though Patricia’s story from before she learned she was pregnant, to learning of her pregnancy, and the decisions she had to make before she gave birth to her son. The semi open adoption that was arranged changed to an open adoption when her son was 12 and ends with her son’s high school graduation and her son’s involvement and thoughts regarding her telling her story.

The book shows the pains and struggles that a... more

Search and Reunion Books - Part 1

Categories: Book Reviews & Lists, Things to Think About

Want to do some research? Homework? I have an exercise that I would love as many readers as possible to undertake. Make a trip to your local library or book store, and ask for books on adoption search and reunion. Also, check out the number of books available for people wanting to adopt. Look too for books on birth parents, stories and support. Then come back & let me know what you discover. If I didn’t know that the numbers of adoption searchers were very high, I might believe that there is not a large enough a market for such books. I have not spoken to any book... more
