During the Winter Olympics in February of this year, I posted a story about U.S. skier Toby Dawson who won a bronze medal for men's mogul skiing. Dawson was adopted from South Korea as a toddler, and during the winter games expressed a desire to find his birth family.
He hoped that the fame that he was achieving during the winter games might assist him in locating his birth family. To aid him in finding his birth family, Dawson posted several photos of himself on NBC's website.... more
Myth #3: All adoptees search – There was a time not that long ago that you would never see anything on television in regards to adoptees searching. However, in the past several years I think the media has greatly exaggerated the number of adopted persons who search for their natural parents. Reunions are popular topics for news and talk shows. Jerry Springer, Maury Povich, Oprah, Good Morning America, and Unsolved Mysteries to name a few all have featured adoptees searching for natural parents or reunited with the natural parents. I and many other adoptees... more
During my years of involvement in the adoption community there have been instances that myself or other triad members were confronted with insensitive and/or insulting remarks, rude questions, unsolicited advice, and general ignorance. The biggest offenders of these myths are the media. The media reinforces these myths and the only way to dispel them is to educate society and the media. There are times that I feel like I am constantly facing a challenge to get others to see that adoption search and reunion is a way to healing and is desirable to many triad members. Sadly... more
As I have gotten older I have become interested in watching Good Morning America on ABC each morning. When I am working and driving on the road I tune in on the radio. On morning back in June of 2005 a gentleman named Marty Johnson appeared on the show. He had searched for his biological father. When he embarked on his search, he knew it would change his life but he really wasn’t prepared for the letter he received at the end of his search.
The letter read "Welcome to the Ogike dynasty!" "You come from a noble and prestigious family." Marty was born after a relationship... more
Actress Jessica Simpson began her foray into adoption with the statement below:
"I want to adopt, and I plan to adopt before I have my own kids," Simpson told Extra.
Her "own" children? If she adopts children, won't those children be her "own" kids too?
Here's the story about Jessica following in Angelina's Footsteps.
Other bloggers have written about the fact that adoption seems to be a fad at the moment among Hollywood actresses.... more
“The only reminder one woman has of her birth parents is a medallion of the Virgin Mary that was attached to her diaper when she was presented from a home for unwed mothers to her adoptive parents.”
Recently, I received a link for a very interesting reunion story in a Kansas City newspaper. The story sounded very familiar to me. A woman named Dodie Jacobi had been given a medallion by her adoptive mom when she was 18 years old. For many years she worn the medallion around her neck. It reminded her of her adoption. When she finally decided that she wanted to find her birth... more
Adoptees arguably have a hereditary advantage: they are often the offspring of highly principled women. Think about it. Women who surrender their children to adoption have made two physically and emotionally strenuous decisions: to carry their babies to term and to give those babies away. Neither is easy, and doing the first makes the second all the more difficult. Maybe it's no wonder that McDaniels, who says his adoptive parents gave him the opportunities to become the man he is, turned out to have the resilience and ingenuity he has shown in... more

Tonight, Sat., February 25, 2006 is the first broadcoast of DMC's adoption search journey on VH1.
Check your loyal station for times. In my locale, they are broadcasting this show several times. So, if you miss this airing, be sure to look for another time to catch it!
This afternoon I was driving in the car when my cell phone rang. It was my husband and during our conversation, I had asked what came in the mail today. One of the first things he mentioned to me is the Sports Illustrated magazine (February 27, 2006 issue) and then told me that I am going to like this issue. Let me preface this with yes, I like sports BUT I don’t read about them on a regular basis and about the only time I watch them is when the Steelers are playing! My husband on the other hand is an avid sports fan. He loves football, baseball, hockey, golf, and watches all the sports shows... more
