A recent article talked about Iowa Governor Thomas J. Vilsack's possible search for his birth mother. The speculation is that he may wait awhile before beginning a search since he is considering a run for the Presidency. I have to admit the thought of a Presidential campaign and an adoption search simultaneously does sound like a full schedule.
I also came across this discussion ... more
Sen. Dick Sears had already been sworn in seven times prior to Wednesday, but his eighth time was special — he shared it with a family member who, just months ago, he did not know existed.
Vermont state senator, Dick Sears, just told about finding his sister. He discussed their reunion, and how she watched him being sworn into office.
An interesting element of Senator Sears' story is that he has dedicated his life to working with delinquent children. Until reunion,... more
According to Saturday, January 6, 2007article written by David Crary an AP National writer that appeared in the NY Times at http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070106/ap_on_re_us/foreign_adoptions_2 foreign adoptions dropped sharply in the United States during 2006. Foreign adoptions have tripled over the past 15 years and due to multiple factors that many would be adoptive parents have reconsidered their options.
The article claims that the declines that were recorded last... more
The article goes on to explain that what the natural mother didn’t know is that her children were the last people she needed to protect herself from and that they wouldn’t have cared a bit about the mistakes she had made. They feel that they wouldn’t have judged her and they would have understood but sadly the past that she was so worried about protecting was buried with her the day she died.
The author of the article chose to search because it was her son who had been born with a life threatening heart condition. Otherwise, she may have... more
I wonder about some of the outraged adoptive parents who sound so appalled that anyone would question their "right" to adopt no matter what their age, financial situation or anything else.
Is everyone entitled to adopt with no regard to any other requirements? Some seem certain that the standards for a woman parenting the child that she bears should be high - yet seemingly feel that standards for adoptive parents should be more lax. Why exactly is China trying to tighten up their adoption practices?
I am not talking about whether all their... more

An article at NorthJersey.com, titled A Birth Mother’s Priceless gift to an Adoptee on December 27 2006 piqued my interest.
I was attracted to the article because the freelance writer of the article, Carol Barbieri, is an adoptee who also found a grave at the end of her search. The difference between her story and my own personal story is that I was 15 months too late, she was 10 years too late. The writers natural mother... more
China's adoption practices and possible changes are discussed in this article. I have been hearing a great deal about this subject including lots of anger and outrage. Mainly it seems because people are disturbed that less children may be adopted due to more restrictive policies.
I can understand that the thought of children remaining in orphanages in China when they could instead be adopted is upsetting to people. The reality... more
T. and J. are a brother and sister living at Five Acres here in California. Their birth father and an uncle were recently located by Family Finders. Although their birth father is now in touch with them and visits regularly, he has some serious alcohol and other issues which prevent him from offering to bring them home to live with him. Ten other children that he has fathered also exist which undoubtedly complicates matters as well. When interviewed on camera, the birth father told his two children that he loves them, and is sorry for... more
I absolutely agree that in the closed adoption era things may not have been handled in the best possible way. Many, not all, may feel as if they were coerced. I wasn’t in their shoes so I can’t say if there were or not but I do believe that adoption is different today. I do believe that counseling is taking place with many of the natural mothers, and it is the natural mothers that make the choices. There are more choices available now such as closed adoption, semi open adoption, and an open adoption and it is the natural mother who can choose what she would... more
